Saginaw Valley State University's baseball team secured a decisive victory over Wayne State University with an 8-0 win in the series opener. The game took place on Friday as part of a four-game series. Tyler McLaren of Saginaw Valley delivered an impressive performance, pitching a complete-game shutout.

The Cardinals, now holding a record of 20-7 overall and 9-1 in the GLIAC, managed to score eight runs across seven hits. Their scoring was distributed with two runs in the third inning, one in the sixth, three in the seventh, and two more in the ninth. Wayne State University struggled offensively, managing only three hits during the game. Bennett Hitzelberger contributed two of those hits while Owen Tuccinardi added another.

Wayne State's pitchers faced challenges throughout the game, with six wild pitches contributing to three of Saginaw Valley's runs. Karter Fitzpatrick took the loss for Wayne State after allowing six runs—four earned—on six hits along with five walks and two strikeouts.

In relief efforts, Keegan Pulford-Thorpe pitched a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout before Avery Mona gave up two earned runs in the ninth.

The teams are set to continue their series with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
