Wayne State University's baseball team split a doubleheader against Davenport University on Saturday at the Farmers Insurance Complex in Caledonia, Michigan. Wayne State secured a 5-2 victory in the first game but fell 14-12 in the second.
In the opening game, Owen Tuccinardi hit a three-run home run in the first inning, bringing home Mason McGuire and Kyle Ray. McGuire scored again later due to a balk, increasing Wayne State's lead. Although Davenport responded with two runs from consecutive doubles in the sixth inning, Wayne State added another run after Tony Hatzigeorgiou reached base on an error.
Karter Fitzpatrick pitched a complete game for Wayne State, allowing two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
The second game saw Davenport take an early 3-0 lead. However, Wayne State gained a temporary advantage by scoring four runs across the third and fourth innings. CJ Maury's RBI single gave them a brief lead before Davenport retaliated with six consecutive runs.
Despite trailing 14-7 at one point, Wayne State narrowed the gap by scoring five more runs. Reagan Paulina's triple and another home run from Tuccinardi were among the late highlights.
Five pitchers contributed for Wayne State during this game. Seth Marano started and allowed seven runs—three of which were earned—before being relieved by David Thurman, Keegan Pulford-Thorpe, Gavin Nash, and Cam Rosen.
Wayne State will attempt to even their series against Davenport on Sunday at 1 p.m., marking their last road match of the regular season.
