Wayne State University's football team faced a challenging match against Grand Valley State University, resulting in a 51-28 loss. The game took place on Saturday afternoon in Allendale, Michigan. This was the highest-scoring game between the two teams since 2009.
In the first quarter, Wayne State's initial drive ended with a punt, while Grand Valley State scored with a 36-yard field goal by Mathew Bacik. The Lakers quickly followed up with a 76-yard touchdown pass from Vincenzo Meschi to Kyle Nott. Another touchdown run by Syone Usma-Harper extended their lead to 17-0.
The second quarter saw GVSU's Damonte McCurdy returning a blocked punt for a touchdown. A three-yard touchdown pass from Meschi to Harrison Unger increased the score to 31-0. Wayne State's Rob Brazziel had an intercepted pass, leading to two more field goals by Bacik before halftime.
In the third quarter, GVSU's Kellen Reed returned the kickoff for 57 yards, setting up another touchdown pass from Alex Thole to Cody Tierney. Wayne State responded with D'Marco Singleton scoring on a 61-yard run. Kejuan Houston intercepted a Thole pass and Brazziel completed a touchdown pass to John Rayba.
During the fourth quarter, XaVior Tyus scored for Wayne State, but Derrick Woods Jr.'s rushing touchdown kept GVSU ahead. Wayne State managed another scoring drive with Rayba catching his second touchdown of the game.
Overall, Grand Valley accumulated 453 yards of total offense compared to Wayne State's 303 yards. Singleton led Wayne State with 60 rushing yards and Rayba caught eight passes for two touchdowns. For Grand Valley, Woods rushed for 56 yards and Meschi threw for two touchdowns.
Wayne State will conclude its season at home starting November 9th against Roosevelt University at Tom Adams Field.
