Wayne State University's men's fencing team delivered a strong performance at the NFC Championships held at Brown University over the weekend, achieving a 6-1 record. The team secured victories against Vassar, MIT, Sacred Heart, Wagner, and Brandeis but fell to Boston College.
In epee competition, Wayne State excelled with a collective record of 46-17. Freshman Mahmoud Elsayed led the team by winning 19 out of 21 bouts. Junior Shuayb Dinkins also performed well with a 10-2 record.
The sabre category saw Wayne State achieve a 38-25 record. Redshirt freshman Zeyad Nofal stood out with 19 wins in his matches. Senior Eyad Marouf contributed significantly by winning 16 bouts.
In foil competition, Wayne State recorded a total of 33 wins and 30 losses. Sophomore Ethan Leung and junior Mitchell Gatrell were key performers for the Warriors in this category.
Head Coach Andy Tulleners expressed satisfaction with the team's overall performance: "This was overall a very good weekend... I am very proud of how our Warriors performed and supported each other."
Looking ahead, Wayne State's men's fencing team will host the Danosi Open on January 11.
