Trailing by two points with just over a minute remaining, Wayne State University's men's basketball team was unable to overcome Grand Valley State University, resulting in a 65-63 defeat. The Warriors, now 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC, failed to score on their final three possessions.
The game began slowly, with the first field goal not occurring until nearly five minutes into play when Grand Valley's Trevor Smith Jr. scored. The early part of the game saw multiple ties and lead changes before Adam Ayrault gave Wayne State a brief lead with one of his four three-pointers.
Grand Valley's Trevon Gunter responded quickly, securing a lead for the Lakers that they maintained throughout the match. Despite efforts from Wayne State to close the gap, including contributions from Carmelo Harris and Tamario Adley, Grand Valley managed to extend their advantage at critical moments.
In terms of shooting accuracy, Wayne State hit 38.5% of their shots compared to Grand Valley's 41.2%. The Warriors outperformed in rebounding but struggled at the free throw line and in converting turnovers into points.
Ayrault led Wayne State with 16 points while Adley recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. For Grand Valley, Gunter scored 14 points and Kaden Brown added another 12.
Wayne State will next face Michigan-Dearborn in a non-conference game on Wednesday night.
