After an impressive college golf career at Wayne State University, Mike Horn has spent the past 24 years developing more than just successful teams. Horn, a two-time All-GLIAC selection and a 2001 inductee into the Wayne State Athletic Hall of Fame, began rebuilding the men's golf program in 2001.

In his third year as coach during the 2003-2004 season, Horn led his team to consistent competition within their conference and state. That season concluded with a first-place finish in the GLIAC after a playoff against Ferris State.

Reflecting on his coaching journey, Horn described it in one word: "Lucky." His approach emphasizes not only athletic success but also academic achievement for his players. He maintains competitive standards while fostering healthy relationships through discipline and empathy.

Horn recalls fond memories from his coaching tenure, particularly highlighting the team's return journey after winning the 2003 conference championship. "After winning the 2003 conference championship in Erie, Pa., the ride back was so special. I did not say a word the whole way back to campus; I just drove and listened to the guys celebrate; it was fantastic."

Throughout his career, Horn has adapted his methods to stay connected with younger players. He acknowledges challenges such as relating to newer generations of athletes but remains committed to evolving his communication and mentorship techniques.

Initially focusing recruitment efforts locally, Horn has since expanded beyond Michigan's metro area and even out of state. This strategy brought diverse talent like Mat Hawryluk, Josh DiCarlo, Tyler Hurtubise from Canada, and Max Leppelmeier from Ohio. Leppelmeier notably tied school records for both 18-hole (65) and 54-hole (204) scoring.

Aside from coaching at Wayne State University, Horn balances family life with managing a small business outside of golf responsibilities. Despite these commitments, he prioritizes team development over personal ventures.

Looking ahead, Coach Horn aims for another conference championship victory and hopes to reach top national rankings by continuing to push players towards excellence both on course performance-wise and academically.

"Ever hear of Wayne? Well you will soon!" says Horn confidently about future prospects under his leadership.

The WSU men's golf program boasts an impressive record: achieving eighteen consecutive winning seasons qualifying sixteen times out twenty years held NCAA Super Regionals having advanced twice during finals rounds between periods covering '08-'09 through '09-'10 seasons respectively.
