Kjellan Oduor, known as KJ, has taken a unique path that blends his passion for basketball with his dedication to improving healthcare in Kenya. Originally from Kenya, KJ's journey on the court has been marked by significant challenges, including two serious injuries that impacted his basketball career.

Playing as a center at Wayne State University, KJ's athletic skills were notable during his initial year at Western Carolina, an NCAA Division 1 program. However, his promising start was disrupted by injuries—a torn meniscus first occurred after visiting Texas Southern and then again at Central Michigan during the preseason. Despite these setbacks, KJ decided to play through the 2023-24 season.

KJ's determination extended beyond the court. His aspiration to become a doctor remained strong even as he transferred to Central Michigan for academic focus. "The dream itself kept me pushing," he said. "I don't have the luxury of being homesick."

The injuries tested more than just his physical endurance; they challenged his mental resilience. After playing at the College of Southern Idaho and being recruited by Central Michigan, another injury happened during an open gym session. Despite these hurdles, KJ maintained focus on his pre-med studies and future plans in healthcare.

Unfazed by the lengthy road to becoming a certified doctor, KJ stated confidently: "I know how long it takes, and I'm ready for it." His vision is not just personal but extends to improving healthcare facilities in Kenya.

Now a redshirt junior at Wayne State University, KJ continues balancing education with recovery while still engaging with basketball. He aims to contribute significantly both academically and athletically.

KJ envisions starting small in Kenya with a doctor's dispensary and is keen on networking during his time in school to assemble a team dedicated to bringing this project to life. "I've seen the health facilities they have," he expressed passionately, "and I know I can help bring change."
