From the bustling streets of Cairo to the collegiate arenas of Wayne State University, Ahmed and Mahmoud Elsayed have made a significant impact on the fencing world. Both brothers are members of the Egyptian National Fencing Team and have brought their skills to Wayne State, where they continue to inspire their teammates.
Their journey is deeply connected to a family legacy in fencing. Coached by their father, who leads Egypt's national team, both brothers were introduced to the sport early in life. Their middle brother, Mohamed, also contributed to this legacy by earning a bronze medal at the 2024 Olympics. "Our family has always been about fencing," Mahmoud shared.
Ahmed's arrival at Wayne State marked a new chapter for the university's fencing program. In his freshman year, he placed third at the 2019 NCAA Championships and later became the first Egyptian épée fencer to podium at a senior World Cup event. His achievements have set high standards for future athletes at Wayne State.
Mahmoud followed in his brother's footsteps by competing in the 2024 Olympics before joining Wayne State. His presence has added depth to the team, pushing his teammates toward excellence. Coach Andy Tulleners noted that "Ahmed and Mahmoud aren't just excellent athletes; they bring a sense of discipline and professionalism that is contagious."
The brothers' influence extends beyond competition as they mentor their teammates with constructive criticism and encouragement during practice sessions. This mentorship has fostered an environment where every member strives for improvement.
Looking ahead, Ahmed and Mahmoud aim to represent Egypt together at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics while continuing their commitment to Wayne State's team. Ahmed serves as a graduate assistant coach, working closely with Mahmoud as they prepare for NCAA and international competitions.
Their story highlights how familial support can drive athletic success and demonstrates how dedication can bridge cultures and strengthen bonds within sports teams.
