The Wayne State University women's fencing team recently hosted the annual Danosi Open in Detroit, featuring over 100 athletes. The open-style competition did not include team scoring, allowing each athlete to compete individually.
In the Mixed Epee category, Salma Abdrabou from Mohandessin, Egypt, Viktoriia Shevchenko from Troy, Michigan, and Reka Galfalvy from Budapest, Hungary participated. Abdrabou recorded a 3-2 score in pool play with a +8 touch differential and ranked 10th going into the round of 32. She won against Lusciana Ruiz but lost to Shuayb Dinkins. Shevchenko also had a 3-2 record with a +7 touch differential and defeated Bianca Holdorf Le Goff before being bested by Ian Chu. Galfalvy secured three wins in pool play with a +7 touch differential and advanced past her first opponent but was defeated by Bryce Heim.
In Women's Foil, Ludovica Mancini from Rome and Anabella Acurero González from Valencia competed. Mancini excelled in pool play with six victories and a +20 touch differential. Ranked second entering the Round of 32, she reached the Gold Medal Bout but lost to Adeline Senic. Acurero González achieved five wins in pool play with a +16 touch differential and reached the Top Eight Round before losing to Samyuta Mummaneni.
Mehreen Siddiqui from Canton, Michigan represented WSU in Mixed Sabre. She finished pool play with one win out of five matches and was ranked 20th but fell to Matthew Oxie.
The Wayne State University women's fencing team is set to participate next at the DeCicco Duals hosted by the University of Notre Dame on January 15.
