The Wayne State University men's tennis team is set to start its 2025 spring season with an exhibition match against Lawrence Tech on February 2nd. The event will take place at the Doris J. and Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility on the WSU campus. Lawrence Tech's team is led by Griffin Mertz, a former standout player for Wayne State.
Following this exhibition, the Warriors will travel to Indianapolis to face the UIndy Greyhounds on February 8th. The Greyhounds had a successful 2024 season with a record of 19-5 and reached the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Wayne State's schedule includes three matches during the weekend of February 14th, starting with a doubleheader against Case Western Reserve and Northwestern Ohio in Cleveland, followed by a match against Toledo on February 16th. Case Western Reserve is currently ranked No. 1 in Division 3 after advancing to last year's NCAA Division 3 quarterfinals.
The Warriors will continue their season hosting Findlay on February 21st before playing away games at Northwood and Western Michigan later that weekend. The Oilers reached the G-MAC Tournament championship final last April, while Western Michigan advanced to the MAC Tournament championship final.
In March, Wayne State will host Hillsdale before traveling to Florida for several matches against top-ranked teams including Barry, Rollins, Embry-Riddle, and Flagler.
GLIAC conference play begins with home matches against Davenport and Grand Valley State on March 28-29. In April, they have scheduled non-conference matches as well as trips facing Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech in Upper Peninsula road trip.
The regular season concludes with a home game against Ferris State on April 18th before competing in the GLIAC Tournament from April 25-27 at Greater Midland Tennis Center.
Head Coach Bryan Morrow expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming season: "Myself along with the entire staff and players are very excited for the upcoming season... Although we are a very young team, we had a great fall and had some really good results."
