The Wayne State University women's basketball team secured a narrow victory over Saginaw Valley State with a final score of 71-67. The game, held in Detroit, saw the Warriors improve their record to 10-7 overall and 5-4 in the GLIAC, while the Cardinals fell to 9-8 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
In the first quarter, Saginaw Valley State took an early lead with a quick offensive start. Despite trailing initially, Wayne State managed to tie the game twice before ending the quarter down by eight points. The second quarter began with Annabel Ayrault's three-pointer for Wayne State, but Saginaw Valley maintained their lead until a late surge from the Warriors gave them a one-point advantage at halftime.
Wayne State continued their momentum into the third quarter, maintaining a slight edge over Saginaw Valley despite several ties. A significant contribution came from Alyssa Leister who hit a crucial three-pointer early in the period. By the end of the third quarter, Wayne State held onto their lead.
The fourth quarter saw both teams scoring evenly with 12 points each. Despite shooting challenges, Wayne State managed to maintain their lead throughout this period.
Statistically, both teams had similar shooting percentages with Saginaw Valley slightly edging out at 50.8% compared to Wayne State's 50%. However, Wayne State dominated in rebounds and free throws which proved pivotal for their victory.
Taylor Thompson led Wayne State with 17 points and seven rebounds. Shea Tripp contributed significantly with 16 points and eight rebounds. For Saginaw Valley, Saniaa Walker and Megan McCalla each scored 19 points.
Wayne State is set to face GLIAC newcomer Roosevelt on January 17 at home.
