Wayne State University's women's tennis team secured a narrow 4-3 victory against the University of Findlay in their home opener. The match saw Wayne State winning all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point.
In the No. 1 doubles position, Anais Ruyssen and Dea Gorgidze defeated Findlay's Polina Zaytseva and Maria Valentina Salek Rivero with a score of 6-2. Malak Arafat and Shanice Weekes came from behind to win their match 6-3 against Anamarija Kovacevic and Elina Ivanova after an early deficit. Shantala Uzcategui and Justine Beaulieu also won their match, finishing with a 6-3 victory over Audrey Ouellet and Charlie Croteau.
In singles play, Ruyssen claimed a hard-fought victory over Anamarija Kovacevic, winning 7-5, 6-2. Arafat overcame an initial set loss to triumph in her match against her opponent with scores of 4-6, 6-1, and a tie-breaker set of 7-6. Gorgidze delivered a strong performance in the No. 3 slot by defeating Maria Valentina Salek Rivero decisively with scores of 6-0, 6-2.
Weekes faced Elina Ivanova in singles but had to retire due to injury after splitting the first two sets. Beaulieu was defeated by Ivanova Lucero with scores of 6-1, 6-4 despite being tied at one point in the second set. Uzcategui lost her singles match against Audrey Ouellet with scores of 6-3, 6-1.
The Wayne State women's tennis team is scheduled to play next on February 28 when they travel to Hillsdale, Michigan to face Hillsdale College.
