Wayne State University's women's basketball team faced a challenging match against Grand Valley State University, resulting in an 85-67 defeat. The game took place in Allendale, Michigan, where the Warriors struggled to keep up with the third-ranked Lakers.
The contest saw Wayne State trailing for nearly the entire game. In the first quarter, Grand Valley State scored six points before Alyssa Leister put Wayne State on the scoreboard. Despite efforts from McKenna Ferguson and others, the Lakers maintained their lead, closing the first quarter at 27-22.
During the second quarter, GVSU continued to extend its advantage. Although Wayne State managed an eight-point run to narrow the gap, they still ended the half trailing 46-39.
The third quarter began with both teams exchanging baskets. However, GVSU increased its lead with a strong performance from Rylie Bisballe and Abrie Cabana. The Lakers entered the final quarter leading 67-51.
In the fourth quarter, Wayne State attempted a comeback but was unable to overcome GVSU's momentum. The Lakers secured their victory by outscoring Wayne State 7-5 in the closing minutes.
Statistically, Grand Valley State had a higher field-goal percentage at 53.3% compared to Wayne State's 46.3%. Both teams showed proficiency from beyond the arc, with WSU shooting 50% and GVSU at 46.4%. The Lakers also led in rebounds and turnovers caused.
For Wayne State, standout performances included Gabi Lutchka scoring 17 points and McKenna Ferguson contributing both offensively and defensively with four steals. Shea Tripp led in rebounds and assists for her team.
Rylie Bisballe of Grand Valley topped all scorers with 19 points while Abrie Cabana added significant contributions from three-point range.
Looking ahead, Wayne State will face Davenport University on February 22nd for their final regular season road game.
