The Wayne State University softball team participated in the Lewis Dome Invitational on Friday, splitting its two games. The Warriors first secured a victory against Bemidji State with a decisive 14-2 win in five innings. Later, they fell to St. Cloud State with a score of 5-2.

In their game against Bemidji State, Wayne State quickly took control by scoring twice early in the match. Senior Rylie Josephson initiated the offense with a single, followed by strategic plays from freshman Morgan Williams and sophomore Logan Forman. Forman was pivotal, contributing significantly with a three-run home run and multiple RBIs.

Freshman Elly Koopman also shone by hitting two home runs during the game, helping to solidify Wayne State's lead. "Koopman's two homer game was the first by a Warrior since Becky Hodder accomplished the feat at Parkside on April 2, 2023," noted WSU records.

On the mound, Sydney Long and junior Hayden Batton delivered strong performances. Long allowed only one earned run over three innings, while Batton struck out five batters across her two innings.

In contrast, Wayne State's second game against St. Cloud State saw them initially take a lead but eventually succumb to the Huskies' late-game surge. Sophomore Molly Hool contributed with an RBI double to put WSU ahead temporarily.

Junior Grace Fisher pitched five-plus innings for Wayne State before Sydney Long took over to close out the game. However, it was not enough as St. Cloud capitalized on errors and timely hits to secure their victory.

"DeWitt and Mia Hool each had two hits," highlighted team statistics for WSU during this matchup.

Wayne State will continue its participation in the Lewis Dome Invitational with upcoming games against Lewis University and Minnesota Duluth on Saturday.
