The Wayne State University women's basketball team concluded their regular season with a decisive 71-51 victory over Lake Superior State University. The match, held at the WSU Fieldhouse, marked Wayne State's 11th home win this season, the most since their 2014-15 campaign.
Before the game began, Wayne State recognized its four seniors: Alyssa Leister, ZaMaria Polk, Ally Shagena, and Shea Tripp.
Wayne State started strong in the first quarter with Leister scoring a three-pointer after a steal by Shagena. LSSU's CeCe Hacker quickly responded with her own three-pointer to tie the game. Polk then scored and completed a three-point play to give Wayne State an early lead. The first quarter ended with Wayne State leading 23-16.
In the second quarter, Gracey Metz from LSSU scored early on but was countered by five consecutive points from Tripp for Wayne State. Although LSSU managed to close the gap to two points at one stage, Wayne State entered halftime ahead 36-29.
The third quarter saw limited scoring initially until McKenna Ferguson hit a three-pointer for Wayne State. Despite efforts from Hacker of LSSU, another triple from Ferguson extended Wayne's lead further as they finished the quarter strongly.
During the fourth quarter, Wayne continued their offensive momentum and maintained a comfortable lead throughout. A brief scoring run by LSSU brought them closer but wasn't enough to challenge Wayne's dominance.
Wayne outperformed Lake Superior in shooting percentage and narrowly won the rebounding contest. They led almost throughout the entire game without trailing once.
Shea Tripp stood out for Wayne with a double-double performance including 19 points and ten rebounds. Alyssa Leister and McKenna Ferguson also contributed significantly to the team's success. For Lake Superior, Breah Golden and CeCe Hacker were notable scorers while Grace Bradford led in rebounds.
Looking ahead, Wayne will participate in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament against University of Wisconsin-Parkside on March 5 at WSU Fieldhouse.
