Wayne State University's softball team started its spring break trip with a split outcome on Saturday in Clermont, Florida. The team won against Ohio Dominican University 3-1 but was narrowly defeated by Wayne State College (Nebraska) 4-3.
In the first game, Wayne State fell behind early when Ohio Dominican's Leea Ibarra and Liana Morreale combined efforts to score a run. However, the Warriors tied the game in the third inning thanks to Mady Ruczynski and Logan Forman's contributions. Later, Kately DeWitt and Elly Koopman secured the win with their timely hits in the fifth inning.
Sophomore Sydney Long led Wayne State's pitching efforts by allowing just one earned run over seven innings while striking out eight batters. For Ohio Dominican, Amelia Spidell gave up three runs across five innings of work.
The second game saw Wayne State take an initial lead through an RBI single from Koopman and a home run by DeWitt. However, Wayne State College turned the tide with a three-run fifth inning, followed by another run in the sixth. Despite a late rally attempt from Wayne State University, they could not close the gap.
Grace Fisher took the loss for Wayne State University after conceding three runs over five innings. Sami Felt earned the win for Wayne State College by holding off her opponents' scoring attempts effectively.
Wayne State will continue its busy schedule on Sunday with games against Sioux Falls and Lake Erie College.
