The Wayne State University softball team has achieved a 5-3 record during its initial games in Florida, bringing their overall standing to 8-9. The Warriors are set to complete their Florida tour with two matches each on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, Wayne State will compete against Hillsdale College at 9 a.m., followed by a game against Slippery Rock University at 1:45 p.m. On Saturday, the team will face Saint Michael's College at 9 a.m. and Emporia State University at 11:15 a.m.
Wayne State has hit 16 home runs in the first 17 games of the season, tying for the program's single-season record of sixteenth place. Freshmen Elly Koopman, Katelyn DeWitt, and Morgan Williams have been standout players for WSU. Koopman is batting .429 with seven extra-base hits and leads the team with 20 RBIs. DeWitt has scored a team-high of 18 runs while Williams tops the on-base percentage chart with .488.
Junior Grace Fisher has recorded a 2.91 ERA with two complete games this season, while sophomore Sydney Long holds a record of two wins and one loss with an ERA of 4.40. Nicole Tines is leading the Warriors in her fourth season as head coach.
Hillsdale College has maintained a strong performance in Florida, holding a record of five wins and one loss before facing Wayne State. Sydney Davis leads Hillsdale in batting average (.365) and walks (13), while Emma Vis boasts three home runs and fifteen RBIs.
Slippery Rock University enters Friday’s match against Saint Michael's with an overall record of four wins and ten losses. Emma Kennedy leads her team with a batting average of .310.
Saint Michael's College is led by Nick Goodreau who begins his seventh year as head coach this weekend against Slippery Rock before playing Wayne State on Saturday morning.
Emporia State University stands at sixteen wins to nine losses this season as they begin their Florida tour on Friday. Leslie Ramos leads ESU in batting average (.356), while Brooke Flewelling holds six home runs alongside twenty-six RBIs.
Upon returning from Florida, Wayne State will host six home games starting next week including matches against Northwood University on March 19th and Davenport University on March 22nd as part of their GLIAC schedule.
