Wayne State University's baseball team achieved a doubleheader sweep against Minnesota Duluth in Davenport, Florida. The victories marked the Warriors' first doubleheader win of the season, with scores of 7-5 and 10-2.
In the first game, Minnesota Duluth initially led by scoring two runs in the second inning. Wayne State responded with three runs in their half of the inning. Caleb Sanders contributed with a single that brought Mason McGuire home, followed by Ty Garza's double which allowed Logan Van Sicklen to score. Sanders later scored on a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs regained a lead at 4-3 in the third inning and extended it to 5-3 in the fourth. However, Wayne State took back control with four runs in the sixth inning. Drew Hill initiated scoring with a groundout allowing Brady Blakita to score. Bennett Hitzelberger then tripled, bringing Sanders and Garza home, followed by Tony Hatzigeorgiou's hit that scored Hitzelberger.
Macio Miller pitched for 6.1 innings for Wayne State, allowing five earned runs on ten hits while striking out four batters. Carson Tehan secured his second save by completing the final two outs.
In the second game, after trailing early at 1-0 through two innings, Wayne State outscored Minnesota Duluth 10-1 over five innings. The team recorded one run in the third inning, four runs each in both fifth and seventh innings, and another run in the sixth.
Key players included Tony Hatzigeorgiou who went 2-for-2 with one run and two RBIs; Reagan Paulina who hit a home run as part of his two hits; and Caleb Sanders who also homered among his two hits.
Gabe Nazelli delivered an impressive performance over 5.1 innings for Wayne State without allowing any earned runs on just one hit while striking out nine batters to improve his record to 3-0 this season. TJ McAllister completed pitching duties handling five outs while giving up only one earned run.
The teams are scheduled for another twin bill matchup on Saturday starting at 2:30 p.m.
