The Wayne State University women's tennis team secured a 7-0 win against Roosevelt University on Friday in Chicago. This marked the first encounter between the two teams. Wayne State, ranked 23rd, boasts a 9-3 overall record and a 6-0 record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Roosevelt University has a 6-12 overall record and a 0-6 record in the GLIAC.
In doubles play, Wayne State's Anais Ruyssen and Dea Gorgidze overcame Sophie Christie and Teodora Petrica with a 6-1 victory at the No. 1 doubles position. Their teammates also achieved similar 6-1 victories in both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches. Malak Arafat and Justine Beaulieu defeated Malena Moya and Vavara Ogorodnikova, while Shanice Weekes and Martyna Szpakowska triumphed over Fabiola Rivas and Ximena Mercado.
The Wayne State team continued its dominance in singles competition. Ruyssen won against Petrica with a score of 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot. Arafat also succeeded in the No. 2 spot against Ogorodnikova with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Gorgidze and Weekes each secured victories as well, with Gorgidze defeating Christie 6-0, 6-1, and Weekes winning over Rivas 6-2, 6-3. In the No. 5 singles, Shantala Uzcategui achieved a 6-0, 6-0 win against Mercado, while Szpakowska concluded the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Moya in the No. 6 position.
Wayne State women's tennis is set to face Purdue University Northwest next, with the match scheduled for Saturday, April 12.
