The Wayne State University softball team wrapped up the home segment of its 2025 season with a non-conference doubleheader against Tiffin University on Tuesday at Gary L. Bryce Field. Tiffin, ranked 21st nationally, swept the series, winning the first game 7-1 and securing the second 10-4.
In the first matchup, Tiffin jumped ahead early with a two-run homer from Jessica Miller. Wayne State's pitcher Elly Koopman settled and successfully retired 10 of the next 12 batters. However, Tiffin expanded its lead with a five-run inning. Wayne State's lone run came in the sixth inning from Logan Forman’s double.
Koopman struggled, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits over five innings. Grace Fisher managed to contain the Dragons in the last two innings. Tiffin’s Ella Esterby pitched the complete game, allowing just one run and striking out six.
Tiffin maintained momentum in the second game, repeating their early lead with another two-run start. Though Wayne State matched Tiffin's score at the bottom of the second inning, Tiffin pulled away with consistent scoring. The Warriors added runs but couldn't close the gap.
Wayne State’s Hayden Batton and Montgomery Pepin combined pitching efforts, conceding 10 runs. Isabella O'Brien and Lexi Key handled pitching duties for Tiffin.
Rylie Josephson and Maddie Hool had notable performances for Wayne State. Tiffin's contributions from Jessica Miller and Kylee Kleiner were instrumental in their victories.
Looking forward, Wayne State is set for future games against Ferris State and Davenport, while a doubleheader against Ohio Dominican has been canceled.
