After a tie-for-third in the Stroke Play Championship of the 2025 GLIAC Championships, the Wayne State University men's golf team secured a spot in the Medal Match Play Championship semifinals. The Warriors, seeded third, overcame the second-seeded and ninth-ranked Grand Valley State with a 3-2 victory, advancing to Championship Sunday. They are set to face the fourth-seeded Saginaw Valley State, with the event scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on Easter.
"It was a complete battle against Grand Valley as it came down to the 18th hole," stated head coach Mike Horn. "Tyler Hurtubise poured in a birdie from 11 feet to cap the come-from-behind victory. All five guys played extremely well. We had two with a 69, two with a 70, and a 71. After we struggled in the second round, we actually battled back there to get the number three seed. The guys really showed their resilience and played an outstanding first match. We look forward to a great battle with Saginaw Valley tomorrow. Really proud of the guys as usual. I think they proved something to themselves today."
Individual players from the team showed strong performances during the Stroke Play. Ian Smith from Canton, Michigan, finished sixth with a score of 142. Luc Warnock tied for seventh, posting 143. Tyler Hurtubise achieved a 16th place tie, scoring 146. Max Leppelmeier and Josh DiCarlo rounded out the top scores for Wayne State, finishing with 148 and 150, respectively.
In team standings, Ferris State secured first place with a score of 569, followed by Grand Valley State at 571. Wayne State and Saginaw Valley State both recorded scores of 578, tying for third place. Roosevelt, Davenport, Parkside, Northern Michigan, Purdue Northwest, and Lake Superior State trailed behind.
In the semifinal round, Wayne State defeated Grand Valley State 3 to 2. Key victories included performances by Leppelmeier, who was 1-up over Manuel Cue, and Hurtubise, who triumphed 2-up against Bryce Wheeler. The upcoming finals will mark Wayne State's second appearance in the last three seasons, with the previous final resulting in a loss against Grand Valley State.
Sunday's pairings for the finals will be determined on Saturday night.
