George Herbert Allen was born April 29, 1918, in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. He graduated from Lake Shore High School and earned degrees from Michigan State Normal College and the University of Michigan. Allen began coaching college football in the late 1940s, moving to the NFL in 1957. He served as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams and Washington Redskins, never posting a losing season. He led Washington to Super Bowl VII and was known for valuing experienced players and strong defensive strategy. Later, he coached in the USFL and at California State University, Long Beach. Allen was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002. His connection to Grosse Pointe marks the beginning of a long and disciplined career in football.
