Taylor Thompson, a senior at Wayne State University's James and Patricia Anderson College of Engineering and a student-athlete on the women's basketball team, exemplifies the university's commitment to its College to Career initiative. This program is part of Wayne State's Prosperity Agenda, aimed at preparing students for meaningful careers through academic knowledge and hands-on experience.

Thompson has been navigating a demanding engineering curriculum alongside her athletic commitments. She has also gained practical experience through an internship with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Detroit District. "The core of what I do is built on structure and sacrifice," Thompson stated. Her responsibilities range from CAD design to hands-on sign creation, contributing to infrastructure projects across Michigan's eastern shoreline.

Raised in Grand Blanc, Michigan, in a military-influenced household, Thompson was driven by a desire to reduce financial burdens on her parents. Her early interest in mechanical engineering was sparked by taking apart gadgets and assembling furniture. "I didn't realize it at the time," she said, "but all those instincts lined up perfectly with engineering."

Thompson plans to graduate in December 2026 and pursue further studies or continue with the Corps through its Recent Graduates Program. She is also considering joining the Army Reserves, following family tradition.

Mentorship has played a crucial role in her journey. Amy Peterson, a faculty member in mechanical engineering, significantly influenced Thompson's success. "She just made things click for me," Thompson noted.

Wayne State Athletics Director Erika Wallace praised Thompson as a model Warrior: "Taylor embodies everything we stand for at Wayne State: resilience, excellence and heart." The university supports students like Thompson with flexible internship schedules and leadership opportunities.

"They've met me where I am," Thompson remarked about Wayne State's support system. "They've helped me go from college to career in a way that's real and personal."
