Cedric Drenth and Mason McGuire have been awarded the GLIAC Commissioner's Award for their athletic and academic achievements. Drenth, from Sulzbach, Germany, received this honor in his final season with Wayne State University's men's tennis program. McGuire, from Lyon Township, Michigan, concluded his baseball career at WSU.
The GLIAC Commissioner's Award recognizes student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically. Eligible recipients must be junior, senior, or graduate-level student-athletes. The awards are given after each athletic season to six male and six female athletes based on a 4.0 GPA scale.
Drenth became a two-time recipient of the award and was named the GLIAC Player of the Year for the second time. He finished his tennis career as WSU's all-time leader in singles (106) and doubles wins (122). Drenth also earned a bachelor's degree in finance with a 3.966 GPA.
McGuire received his first GLIAC Commissioner's Award after an impressive season on the field and academically. He was recognized as a D2CCA All-Region Second Team utility player and was named to the All-GLIAC Second Team at catcher and second base. McGuire maintained a 3.78 GPA while majoring in sport management.
Both athletes have left significant marks on their respective sports at Wayne State University through their dedication to excellence in athletics and academics.
