Former Wayne State University pitcher Hunter Brown has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month for June. Brown, who played for the Warriors from 2017 to 2019, began July with a victory over the Colorado Rockies.
According to MLB.com, Brown is currently the only qualifying pitcher with an ERA under 2.00 this season. In June, he allowed just four runs in 30 and one-third innings, achieving a 1.19 ERA, which was the best in the American League for that month. His performance included seven scoreless innings and nine strikeouts against the Phillies.
Brown's record this year stands at 9-3 for Houston with a 1.82 ERA and a WHIP of 0.90 over 104 innings pitched. He has struck out 126 batters in his 17 starts this season after recording 179 strikeouts last year. His nine wins are just behind MLB leaders Max Fried and Tarik Skubal, while his WHIP ranks second only to Skubal among pitchers with at least 102 innings pitched. Additionally, Brown's opponent batting average of .180 is currently the lowest in Major League Baseball.
During his time at Wayne State University, Brown not only excelled on the field but also academically as a Public Relations major, earning a spot on the Academic Honor Roll five times and achieving a perfect GPA in his final semester.
