The Wayne State University women's golf team began its 2025-26 season on Saturday at the Champions of Women's Golf Classic, hosted by Ohio Dominican in Columbus, Ohio. After the first round, the Warriors are tied for sixth place out of 15 teams with a score of 317 (+37).

Claudia Portillo led Wayne State individually, finishing the day tied for fifth after shooting a 75 (+5). Portillo recorded bogeys on six holes and made a birdie on the par four eighth hole.

"It was great to get the season started today, embrace the first tee nerves and get back into the flow of competition," said head coach Larry Hamilton. "There were some highs and lows today, but also a lot of really steady play. I'm very proud of how everyone kept focused throughout their round and I'm looking forward to tomorrow."

Other contributors for Wayne State included Clara Laffitte (tied for 27th with an 80), Ting-Yu Kuo and Orianna Bylsma (both tied for 31st with scores of 81), and Sonia Bayahya (tied for 43rd with an 83).

Tiffin leads the tournament at +23 (303), followed by Gannon (+28), Ashland (+29), Davenport (+32), and Walsh (+33). Wayne State shares sixth place with Charleston at +37.

The final round is scheduled to begin Sunday at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start involving all participating teams.
