Wayne State volleyball sweeps doubleheader ahead of GLIAC opener

The Wayne State University volleyball team improved its season record to 6-1 after winning both matches on Saturday in Amherst, New York. The Warriors defeated Clarion University in straight sets with scores of 25-21, 25-9, and 25-20. Later in the day, they secured another sweep against Daemen College, finishing with set scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 25-16.

"Overall, a positive weekend for the Warriors," said head coach Tim Koth. "Definitely some growth from our entire team. We are looking forward to getting home and starting GLIAC play."

Wayne State players Kayla Giroux and Paige Giehtbrock were named to the All-Tournament Team alongside athletes from Dallas Baptist, Clarion, and Daemen.

In the match against Clarion, Wayne State recorded a .202 hitting percentage with 37 kills and 18 errors over 94 total attacks. Clarion finished with a .019 hitting percentage. Kayla Giroux led the Warriors with 15 kills and a .565 hitting percentage. Leigha Baldwin contributed seven kills at a .385 rate. Setter Kayla Dulgar had 29 assists and two aces; Marley Onken also delivered her first two career aces. Defensively, Baldwin registered six blocks while Kendyl Andrews collected a team-high 13 digs.

Against Daemen, Wayne State posted a .267 hitting percentage compared to Daemen's .041. Five players reached at least five kills: Baldwin (8), Giroux (8), Katie Smith (6), Giehtbrock (6), and Katerina Stout (5). Dulgar added three service aces along with her 24 assists. Abby Macalaguim led in digs with twelve.

The Warriors will begin conference play next Friday when they host Saginaw Valley State at Matthaei Center for their GLIAC opener.
