Two members of the Wayne State University women’s tennis team were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team for the 2025-26 season, according to a May 12 announcement.
The recognition highlights academic and athletic achievements by student-athletes. Martyna Szpakowska and Shantala Uzcategui received the honors after strong performances both in their studies and on the court.
Szpakowska, a senior from Gdansk, Poland, was selected for her second appearance on the Academic All-District Team. She holds a 3.93 grade-point average in Psychology Honors and has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll every semester during her time at Wayne State. The university said she “was a 2024-25 inductee into WSU’s Chi Alpha Sigma Athlete Honor Society class, has been on the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team a pair of times, has twice been an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar Athlete, and has been a recipient of the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award two times.” On court, Szpakowska earned First Team All-GLIAC honors in singles and doubles with records of 15-3 in singles play and 22-4 in doubles matches. She also contributed over 125 community service hours through coaching, volunteering with cancer patient support efforts, and food delivery drives.
Uzcategui is earning her first Academic All-District honor after posting a perfect 4.00 GPA in Exercise and Sport Science while being named four times to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. The release states she “was a recipient of the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award, garnered Honorable Mention All-GLIAC honors, and was recognized with ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.” In competition this year she recorded ten wins in singles matches along with nine wins playing doubles.
The Wayne State Warriors Women’s Tennis team finished its season with an overall record of eight wins against nine losses. The team advanced to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals before being eliminated by Grand Valley State University.
Wayne State Warriors Women’s Tennis competes as part of NCAA Division II athletics within the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference based out of Detroit as part of its intercollegiate sports program at Wayne State University,according to the official athletics website.
