The Wayne State University baseball team was eliminated from the NCAA Midwest Regional on May 15 after a 10-0 defeat by the University of Indianapolis. The third-seeded Warriors ended their season with a record of 37-16, while seventh-seeded UIndy improved to 34-22.

This result marks the end of Wayne State’s season, which saw the team tie its second-highest win total in school history and achieve a .698 winning percentage, ranking fourth in program records. The game was played in Springfield, Illinois.

UIndy scored four runs in the fourth inning, three in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two more in the seventh for a total of fifteen hits. Wayne State managed only four hits during the game, recorded by Bennett Hitzelberger, Drew Hill, Alfredo Velazquez, and Ty Garza. Seven pitchers took to the mound for Wayne State. Keegan Pulford-Thorpe started and finished his collegiate career with a final record of five wins and two losses after allowing five runs—four earned—on six hits over several innings. Ethan Getting provided relief with one scoreless inning that included one hit allowed and one strikeout.

The Warriors compete at the NCAA Division II level as part of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and play their home games in Detroit under their mascot ‘W the Warrior’, according to the official website.

Looking back on past achievements provides context for this year’s performance; Wayne State previously captured a GLIAC Tournament title in 2010 according to the official website.

As another season concludes for Wayne State baseball, players and coaches will look ahead to future opportunities within their conference and at national tournaments.
