The Wayne State University baseball team received additional All-Region recognition on May 18, as three players were honored by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association. Junior outfielder Drew Hill was named to the First Team, while redshirt junior starting pitcher Will Lowery and senior utility player Bennett Hitzelberger earned Second Team selections.
These recognitions highlight individual achievements during a season in which Wayne State continued to build on its competitive tradition. The program competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and at the NCAA Division II level, according to the official website.
Hill, who previously earned GLIAC Freshman Player of the Year honors and was a Second Team All-GLIAC selection in 2024, rebounded from a sophomore slump to post strong numbers this season. He hit .393 with 50 runs scored, 11 home runs, and started all 53 games for Wayne State. Hill registered multiple hits in a team-high 25 contests and reached base in up to 22 consecutive games.
Lowery joined Wayne State after two successful seasons at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. He became an important part of the pitching staff with an 8-2 record over 15 appearances and threw a nine-inning no-hitter against Parkside on March 20. That performance earned him both GLIAC Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week honors.
Hitzelberger concluded his collegiate career as one of Wayne State’s most accomplished players. A three-time All-GLIAC honoree, he played in nearly every game this season with a .335 batting average and led several offensive categories including multi-hit games and longest hitting streaks for his team.
The Warriors play their home games in Detroit, Michigan, where they are known by their nickname “Warriors” with “W the Warrior” serving as mascot, according to the official website. Looking ahead to next year, Hill and Lowery are expected to return for their final collegiate campaigns while Hitzelberger leaves having recorded nearly two hundred career hits.
