Wayne State University’s men’s tennis team, ranked 14th nationally, secured a narrow victory against 13th-ranked Rollins College with a score of 4-3 in Orlando. This win improved Wayne State’s overall record to 8-2.

In doubles competition, Wayne State struggled and lost all three matches. In the No. 1 position, Cedric Drenth and George Day were defeated by Fabian Gusic and Moritz Anterist after holding a brief lead. Sam Knowles and Tom Wasner faced Nicolas de Giacomo and Luke Quaynor in the No. 2 slot but fell short with a score of 6-2. Benjamin Hill and Luis Klaus also faced defeat in the No. 3 spot against Richard Stoiberer and Pietro Cappellaro.

The singles matches turned the tide for Wayne State. Drenth set an early tone with a decisive victory over Quaynor in the No. 1 singles position. Day triumphed over de Giacomo, while Hill won against Stoiberer, both contributing to Wayne State’s overall success.

Klaus and Max Faniel were defeated in their respective singles matches, but Wasner clinched the victory for Wayne State by winning his tie-breaker set against Gusic.

Head Coach Bryan Morrow commented on the match: “Incredible match. We did not play well in doubles… These guys showed some incredible heart.” He praised his players for handling pressure effectively.

Wayne State will face Embry-Riddle next at the Crotty Tennis Complex on March 9, with matches starting at 11:00 AM.
