The Wayne State University women’s basketball team, seeded fourth, faced a setback in the GLIAC Tournament semifinals against Grand Valley State University. The Warriors, with an overall record of 19-11, were defeated by the top-seeded Lakers, who hold a 31-2 record. The final score was 78-54 in favor of Grand Valley State.
The game began on a promising note for Wayne State as Shea Tripp scored the first seven points. However, Grand Valley responded with their own run and managed to level the score at 15-15 by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Grand Valley State took control by outscoring Wayne State 23-7. This was achieved through efficient shooting and capitalizing on turnovers committed by Wayne State. By halftime, the Lakers had built a significant lead of 38-22.
Despite efforts from Taylor Thompson and Alyssa Leister in the third quarter, Wayne State struggled to close the gap. Grand Valley maintained their lead throughout the game and finished strong in the fourth quarter.
Statistically, Grand Valley attempted more field goals and won both turnover battles and offensive rebounds against Wayne State. Tripp led her team with 22 points while Thompson contributed with 12 points and six rebounds.
Nicole Kamin stood out for Grand Valley with a game-high 24 points, supported by Paige Vanstee’s contribution of ten points. Kamin also excelled defensively with two blocks and five steals.
Wayne State now awaits their potential selection for the NCAA Tournament during Sunday’s NCAA Selection Show at 10:30 p.m., where they hope to secure one of eight spots in their region.
