The Wayne State University men’s golf team finished in 12th place out of 20 teams at the NCAA Midwest/Central Super Regional, which concluded on May 9 at Ferris State’s Katke Golf Course. The Warriors ended their season with a total score of 890 (+26) after rounds of 294, 300, and 296. Central Missouri’s CJ Phillips was the individual medalist with a score of -5.
This result marks the end of the team’s campaign in what head coach Mike Horn said was challenging weather. “We fought really hard today,” Horn said. “It was windy, cold, rainy, and just miserable at times and the boys really gave it their best shot today. We came up just about 10 shots short and hopefully this is a huge learning experience for all of our Warriors who basically were either freshmen or competing full-time for the first time. I’m looking forward to the next couple of years as we should be a team to be reckoned with for sure.”
Horn also acknowledged individual efforts and milestones within his squad: “Happy birthday to Will Pollack today and finishing 12th was a pretty good showing in a very strong field,” he said. “Great round by Josh Lahner today firing a two-under-par 70. The boys should be very proud of themselves for making it to the NCAA Tournament as freshmen and first timers. We’ve got a lot to look forward to. Go Warriors.”
Wayne State’s lineup included Jack Julian, Will Pollack, Josh Lahner (all tied for T43), Andrew Daily (T60), Troy Chapman (first two rounds), and Luke Maher (final round as substitute). The top four teams advancing from this regional are Grand Valley State (+3), UMSL (+8), Central Missouri (+9), and Washburn (+15). Two individuals not on advancing teams also qualified for finals.
The Wayne State Warriors Men’s Golf team holds membership in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and participates in NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics, according to the official website. The program operates from Detroit, Michigan.
Looking ahead, all six individuals who competed will return next fall: true freshman Will Pollack; redshirt freshmen Troy Chapman and Jack Julian; sophomore Luke Maher; redshirt sophomore Andrew Daily; and junior Josh Lahner.
