Wayne State men’s tennis falls to Northwood in NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament

The Wayne State University men’s tennis team lost 4-1 to Northwood University in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament, according to a May 11 announcement. The match ended the season for the No. 20-ranked Warriors, who finished with a record of 14-11.

The loss marks the end of Wayne State’s fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The team achieved a strong home record this season, going 7-1 when playing in Detroit.

During doubles play, Wayne State switched its pairings but dropped two out of three matches and conceded the doubles point. George Day and Sam Knowles were defeated by Juan Perez Garcia and Marc Farras with a score of 6-4 at the top spot. Luis Klaus and Thomas Mathys secured a win at No. 2 doubles, beating AJ Duggan and Sergio Lopez Guillen 6-4. Harry Forsyth and Tom Wasner narrowly lost their match against Finn Buschmaas and Andrey Pikulin, falling 7-6.

In singles competition, Klaus was Wayne State’s only winner as he closed his final season with a straight-set victory over Pikulin (6-0, 6-3). Day lost at No.1 singles to Guillen (6-4, 6-2), while Wasner was defeated by Farras (6-3, 6-2) at No.3 singles. Mathys fell to Duggan (6-0, 6-4) at No.4 singles before Northwood clinched the overall match result.

Wayne State Warriors Men’s Tennis is part of Wayne State University’s intercollegiate athletics program and is based in Detroit, Michigan; it participates in NCAA Division II as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference according to the official website.
