The Wayne State University men’s tennis team was selected on May 4 as the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament. The tournament will be hosted by Ferris State and the University of Indianapolis, with Wayne State set to face Northwood on Monday, May 11, in Big Rapids, Michigan.
This selection marks the team’s 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and its tenth under head coach Bryan Morrow. Wayne State was previously national runner-up in 2022 and reached the national quarterfinals in both 2023 and 2024.
Eight teams earned bids to this year’s Midwest Regional: Indianapolis (No.1), Ferris State (No.2), Wayne State (No.3), Tiffin (No.4), Grand Valley State (No.5), Northwood (No.6), Drury (No.7), and Findlay (No.8). The winner between Wayne State and Northwood will play either Ferris State or Drury on Saturday, May 10.
Following their performance at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, where they advanced to the championship match but lost narrowly to Ferris State, Wayne State holds a season record of 14-10 overall and a mark of 10-4 within their region.
The team has been ranked throughout the season by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and is currently listed at No.20 nationally; graduate student Luis Klaus is ranked No.37 among singles players nationwide.
Klaus and George Day received First Team All-GLIAC honors for singles play, while Tom Wasner and Thomas Mathys were named Second Team All-GLIAC for singles; doubles pairs Klaus/Forsyth and Day/Mathys also earned Second Team recognition.
Wayne State Warriors Men’s Tennis is part of Wayne State University’s intercollegiate athletics program based in Detroit, Michigan; it competes at the NCAA Division II level as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an emphasis on competitive excellence according to the official website.
A total of forty-eight teams received bids to this year’s NCAA Tournament; fifteen secured automatic qualification by winning conference tournaments. The winners from each regional section will advance to compete for a national title at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Arizona from May 20 through May 24.
