Wayne State men’s tennis to face Northwood in NCAA Midwest Regional opener

The Wayne State University men’s tennis team will play against Northwood University in the opening round of the NCAA Midwest Regional on May 11. The match is scheduled for 12:30 PM in Big Rapids, Michigan, according to a May 10 announcement. Wayne State enters as the No. 3 seed and will be making its 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

This matchup is significant as it continues Wayne State’s tradition of participation at a national level, highlighting their sustained success within collegiate athletics. The program competes in NCAA Division II and is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, according to the official website.

In recent competition, Wayne State finished as runner-up at the GLIAC Tournament after wins over Roosevelt and Grand Valley State before falling to Ferris State. Several student-athletes received All-GLIAC honors prior to that tournament: Luis Klaus and George Day were named First Team All-GLIAC for singles; Tom Wasner and Thomas Mathys earned Second Team recognition; while doubles pairings Klaus/Forsyth and Day/Mathys were both named Second Team All-GLIAC. Freshman Warren Gunnar was selected as an honorable mention.

Under head coach Bryan Morrow, now leading his tenth NCAA appearance with Wayne State, the program has achieved an overall record of 18-15 in tournament play with three regional titles and reached the National Championship match in 2022. Last year, Wayne State lost narrowly to Ferris State after gaining an early lead.

Northwood enters this year’s contest with a season record of 17-2 and recently won both their conference regular season (7-1 G-MAC) and tournament championships. The Timberwolves are ranked No. 30 nationally by ITA and are seeded sixth for this regional event. Three Northwood players earned G-MAC All-Conference honors this season.

Wayne State Warriors Men’s Tennis is based in Detroit, Michigan, participates at a high competitive level nationally and regionally, focusing on athlete development through intercollegiate competition according to information from their official website. The winner between Wayne State and Northwood will advance to face either Ferris State or Drury on May 12.
