The Wayne State University men’s tennis team achieved a decisive 7-0 victory over the University of Findlay, maintaining their unbeaten streak for the season. The match took place on Friday in Detroit, with Wayne State now holding a record of 4-0.
In doubles play, the Warriors secured all three matches. Cedric Drenth and George Day triumphed over Dallas Ramsay and Luigi Bove with a score of 6-3 in the No. 1 doubles position. Sam Knowles and Tom Wasner also won their match 6-3 against Elijah Hadler and Soh Kuyama in the No. 2 slot. Benjamin Hill and Luis Klaus completed the sweep by defeating Clement Andrieu and Runa Kagoshima, again with a score of 6-3.
In singles competition, Tom Wasner overcame Dallas Ramsay with scores of 6-4, 6-3, while Luis Klaus defeated Clement Andrieu 6-4, 6-4. Cedric Drenth emerged victorious in a tie-breaker set against Soh Kuyama after an initial split of sets at 6-3 and 3-6. In another tie-breaker set, George Day defeated Luigi Bove after opening strong but allowing Bove to close within one point before claiming victory at 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Benjamin Hill won his match against Matthis Veniard with scores of 6-1, followed by a close tie-breaker at 7-6 (8-6). Sam Knowles rounded out the win for Wayne State by overcoming Runa Kagoshima at scores of 7-6 (7-0), and then securing a second set at 6-2.
Head Coach Bryan Morrow expressed pride in his team’s performance: “I was very proud of the guys today, they were able to fight through some adversity and stay level-headed. Findlay has some really nice players on their team who just never went away. The energy from our doubles matches carried over into our singles play and I was just very happy with the performance from the team today.”
Wayne State’s next challenge will be against Northwood University in Midland, Michigan on Saturday, February 22 at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.
