The Wayne State University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams commenced their participation in the NCAA Championships on Tuesday at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis. The competition spans five days, during which the Warriors competed in the 800 free relay and saw all three male divers qualify for subsequent events.
In the men’s category, Wayne State secured seventh place in the 800 free relay, earning 24 points with a time of 6:29.25. The team comprised Olin Charnstrom from Oxford, Michigan; Trevor Jones from Farmington, Michigan; Khalil Ben Ajmia from Tunis, Tunisia; and Clayton Kinnard from Dexter, Michigan.
On the diving front, Julio Osuna from Tijuana, Mexico; John Martin from Brownstown, Michigan; and Max Wasiniak from Huron, Ohio advanced to further rounds. Osuna achieved second place at both one meter (313.90) and three meters (318.00). Martin tied for 14th place with a score of 250.90 at one meter and secured fifth place with 271.15 at three meters. Wasiniak ranked 11th with a score of 258.30 at one meter and was placed 15th with a score of 244.45 at three meters. The preliminaries and finals for the three-meter event are scheduled for Thursday, while the one-meter event will occur on Saturday.
For the women’s team, Wayne State finished in 13th place in their relay event, earning eight points with a time of 7:26.65. The team included Barbara Munoz from Yumbo, Colombia; Emily Hedley from Whitley Bay in Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom; Elly Belmore from St. Clair Shores, Michigan; and Alli Vassilakos from Clarkston, Michigan.
In women’s diving results at one meter saw Alicia Viaches from East Lansing, Michigan finish in 35th place with a score of 185.25 while Wen Wadsworth-Curcuru from Kalamazoo, Michigan placed 42nd with a score of 158.40. At greater heights on the diving board Viaches achieved a rank of 22nd scoring 210.40 whereas Wadsworth-Curcuru was positioned at rank number forty-three having scored only about half that amount -173 .60- by comparison!
Preliminary activities are set to begin Wednesday morning at ten o’clock sharp!
