Wayne State University’s men’s tennis team, ranked 18th nationally, is set to commence its GLIAC competition by hosting Davenport University and Grand Valley State University. The matches are scheduled for March 28 against Davenport and March 29 against Grand Valley State, both starting at 10:00 AM.
The Warriors concluded their non-conference schedule with a victory over Tiffin University, securing a 6-1 win after sweeping the singles matches despite losing the doubles point.
Davenport’s Panthers enter the competition with a record of 13-4, including a split in their GLIAC matches. They have won three of their last four contests. Wayne State has been successful in their past seven encounters with Davenport, including a decisive win last year.
Davenport is led by Patrick Grashorn, who has coached the men’s team to a 193-153 record over his 15 seasons. He also coaches the women’s team with a current record of 187-168.
Grand Valley State’s Lakers hold a 9-2 record and remain unbeaten in GLIAC play ahead of their match against Ferris State University. Last season, Wayne State defeated GVSU in all three meetings.
Samantha Barr leads Grand Valley State in her sixth season as head coach, boasting a record of 67-40 with the men’s team and an 85-36 mark with the women’s team.
In recent ITA rankings, Wayne State is placed at number 18 as a team. Cedric Drenth is ranked as the No. 22 singles player individually. In doubles, Drenth alongside George Day forms the No. 21-ranked duo.
