Wayne State University’s women’s basketball team secured a 68-53 victory over Ferris State University in a recent matchup. This win improved Wayne State’s record to 17-10 overall and 12-7 in the GLIAC, while Ferris State now stands at 19-9 overall and 13-6 in the GLIAC. Notably, this game marked the lowest point total that Wayne State has held against Ferris State since their close win in 2021.
The game opened with Taylor Thompson from Grand Blanc, Michigan scoring for Wayne State. Both teams exchanged points throughout the first quarter, ending with Wayne State leading 12-9. In the second quarter, Shea Tripp from Jackson, Michigan extended Wayne State’s lead before Ferris State briefly took the lead at 18-17. However, Koko Sylvester of Toledo, Ohio quickly regained control for Wayne State with a lay-up that sparked a scoring run.
During the third quarter, Thompson again initiated scoring for Wayne State. Despite efforts from Ferris’ Mya Hiram at the free throw line to narrow the gap, Alyssa Leister from St. Louis, Michigan hit a three-pointer to maintain Wayne’s lead. The fourth quarter saw Wayne expand their advantage to as much as thirteen points before closing out with a final score of 68-53.
Statistically, Wayne shot an impressive 50% from the field compared to Ferris’ 31.1%. Both teams had similar performance from beyond the arc at around 28%. Rebounding favored Wayne slightly at 40 to Ferris’ 34.
Shea Tripp led her team by scoring fifteen points and grabbing eight rebounds while Koko Sylvester contributed significantly with thirteen points and four steals. On Ferris’ side, Kenzie Bowers was notable with thirteen points and eight rebounds.
Looking ahead, Wayne is set to face Lake Superior State University on March 1st at home where they will honor seniors Alyssa Leister, ZaMaria Polk of Detroit’s Mumford High School via Pensacola and Cleveland States; Ally Shagena from Fort Gratiot’s Port Huron Northern; alongside Shea Tripp prior to tip-off.
