The Wayne State University women’s golf team finished the first 36 holes of the NCAA East Regional on May 4 at Findlay Country Club, recording a total score of 659 (+83) and placing 13th out of 18 teams.
The tournament is important for teams aiming to advance to the National Championships, as only the top four teams and top two individuals not on an advancing team will move forward. The competition tests both individual and team performance across three rounds.
Head coach Larry Hamilton said, “Day one played tough, a lot of wind, 36 holes and the course was still very soggy from all the rain that it had received. We’re looking forward to today too, and seeing if we could move up a couple spots on the leaderboard.”
Among Wayne State’s golfers who completed all 36 holes, Ting-Yu Kuo tied for 19th with a score of +14 (76-82), Sonia Bayahya tied for 34th at +17 (81-80), Clara Laffitte tied for 49th at +21 (82-83), and Amiyah Gibson finished tied for 78th at +31 (90-85). Team standings after two rounds show Findlay leading with a score of +29, followed by Grand Valley State (+40) and Missouri-St. Louis (+47).
Wayne State Warriors Women’s Golf is affiliated with Wayne State University, participates in intercollegiate athletics within NCAA Division II in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and operates out of Detroit, Michigan according to the official website.
Weather permitting, play will conclude Tuesday with an additional round starting at 9 a.m., determining which teams or individuals will advance.
