The Wayne State University women’s golf team achieved a notable second-place finish at the Cav Classic held on Tuesday in Canton, Ohio. Among the nine competing teams, Wayne State delivered its best performance of the spring season, propelled by strong individual showings from Sabel Imesch and Claudia Portillo. Both athletes secured a place in the three-way tie for fourth.

The team leaderboard saw Wayne State finish with a score of 629 (+53), closely trailing Gannon, which topped the standings with a 622 (+46). Ohio Dominican followed closely, claiming third place with a score of 631 (+55).

Wayne State’s players delivered consistent performances throughout the tournament. Imesch and Portillo both ended with scores of 155 (+11). Additionally, team member Ting-Yu Kuo also finished in the top ten, tied for seventh with a score of 156 (+12).

This marked the fourth occasion this season where multiple Wayne State players secured top ten placements at events. Earlier in the fall, Portillo and Kuo achieved similar results in consecutive tournaments, and Portillo was joined by Wygonik and Imesch in the final fall event. However, this tournament was the first such instance during the spring.

Looking ahead, Wayne State prepares to compete in the postseason, with the GLIAC Championships scheduled from April 25 to April 27 at Stonehedge North Golf Course. The event will feature a Stroke Play Championship, followed by a Medal Match Play Championship semifinals for the top four teams, culminating in the finals on Sunday.

“Portillo and Kuo were both inside the top 10 in back-to-back fall tournaments before Portillo was joined by Wygonik and Imesch in the final fall event, so this is the spring’s first occurrence.”
