The Wayne State University women’s tennis team secured a 5-2 victory against Oakland University on Sunday. This match, held in Detroit, was the final non-conference game of the season for Wayne State, improving their record to 4-3.
In doubles competition, Wayne State gained an early advantage by winning two out of three matches. Malak Arafat and Justine Beaulieu defeated Tara Montreuil and Martyna Piechowicz with a score of 5-7 at the No. 2 position. Shanice Weekes and Martyna Szpakowska also won their match against Nisa Bulut and Best Lee with a score of 6-2 in the No. 3 slot. However, Anais Ruyssen and Dea Gorgidze were defeated by Emilia Jarvinen and Edie Hammond with a score of 6-3 in the No. 1 doubles spot.
In singles play, Ruyssen managed to recover from her earlier loss by defeating Jarvinen with scores of 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles slot. Arafat had a challenging match but emerged victorious against Bulut after splitting her first two sets (6-0, 4-6) and winning the tie-breaker set (6-3) in the No. 2 position.
Weekes triumphed over Hammond with scores of 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 4 slot while Shantala Uzcategui won against Montreuil with scores of 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 6 position.
Despite these victories, both Gorgidze and Beaulieu faced defeats in their singles matches; Gorgidze lost to Lee (5-7, 2-6), while Beaulieu was narrowly beaten by Piechowicz (6-3, 2-6,13 -15).
Wayne State will resume Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Friday when they host Davenport University.
