Wayne State University has announced the promotion of Will Vergollo to Associate Head Coach of the men’s basketball team. This decision was confirmed by head coach Bryan Smothers, who praised Vergollo’s contributions over the past three years.

“Will has shown a high level of production over our first three years at WSU,” remarked Smothers. “His loyalty and work ethic make him an invaluable asset to our program.”

Vergollo joined Wayne State as an assistant coach in July 2022 and has completed his third year with the team. Under his tenure, the Warriors have improved their performance significantly, increasing their win total each season from eight in 2022-23 to 14 wins and a GLIAC Tournament victory in 2023-24, culminating in 15 wins for the 2024-25 season. The team also recorded an impressive 11-9 record in conference play this past season.

In addition to on-court success, Wayne State’s squad achieved academic recognition with eight players named Academic All-GLIAC recipients, tying a program record set over two decades ago. Four student-athletes received All-GLIAC honors: Rob Lee, Jr., Carmelo Harris, Tamario Adley, and Ray Williams, Jr., with Lee being voted First Team All-GLIAC.

Before joining Wayne State, Vergollo was part of Butler University’s staff starting in the 2017-18 season. He primarily served as a basketball analyst but took on an interim assistant coaching role during the 2020-21 season. During his time at Butler, he managed video operations and analytics while helping prepare scouting reports. His efforts contributed to Butler’s NCAA Tournament appearance in his first year there.

Vergollo also spent time at Milwaukee as part of LaVall Jordan’s staff during the Panthers’ run to the Horizon League Tournament championship game in 2016-17. Earlier in his career, he worked with Michigan’s basketball program as a video analyst and director for basketball camps.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in sports management from Michigan and earned a master’s degree in higher education administration and leadership from West Virginia Wesleyan.

Vergollo resides with his wife Alyssa and their two children, Ella and Dominic.
