State Rep. Jason Wentworth (R-Farwell) announced that House Select Committee on Reducing Car Insurance Rates has made updates to help prepare drivers for upcoming changes to car insurance laws, according to a Michigan House Republicans press release.
Wentworth announced that the updates would help Michiganders navigate the changes that will take effect on Wednesday, July 1 to the state's no-fault system. The committee put the updates on its www.ReduceMiRatesNow.com website, according to the press release.
“Michigan families were sick and tired of paying astronomical car insurance rates they could not afford, and they were losing patience with their elected officials who were not delivering,” Wentworth said in the press release. "The House made a commitment to succeed where previous legislatures had failed."
Wentworth said in the press release that the House made major changes to the no-fault system.
"To give Michigan drivers a better sense of what to expect, we restructured our website to help them navigate the steps required to receive the savings they deserve," Wentworth said in the press release.
The website is available to give Michiganders a chance to look over the new law and become familiar with its changes. It provides information on personal injury protection (PIP) coverage levels, as well as a guide to forms that Michigan drivers will need to fill out over the next few weeks, according to the press release.
The committee's reforms include fee schedules to protect accident victims from being overcharged by hospitals, choices on insurance policies' medical portions, guaranteed savings for Michigan drivers and measures to help reduce fraud and abuse in the system, the press release states.
The website also has a step-by-step guide on how to choose a coverage option to meet budget needs, according to the press release.
Wentworth recommended in the press release that drivers also begin looking for the lowest insurance rates sooner rather than later and to consult with insurance agents for further advice.
