The 2023-24 Wayne State University men's fencing team had five GLIAC All-Academic honorees, including four on the Excellence Team, which is tied for the most ever. The five total honorees are the second most in this fifth year that the conference recognized student-athletes from non-GLIAC sports.
Criteria state that the student-athlete must be an active member on the roster at the end of the season and not a freshman or a first-year transfer student.
Earning a spot on the All-Academic Excellence Team (cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5) were junior Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt), along with sophomores Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco School of the Arts), Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich./Churchill), and Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.).
Marouf (Biological Sciences - 3.92) earned his second consecutive All-Academic Excellence Team recognition, while Garrett (Marketing - 3.84), Gatrell (Finance - 3.73), and Heim (Chemistry Honors - 3.8) were honored in their first year eligible.
Named to the All-Academic Team for having a cumulative GPA between 3.0 and 3.49 was graduate student Ahmed Elsayed (Tanta, Egypt). This is the fourth consecutive year that Elsayed (master's in Mechanical Engineering - 3.28) was honored.
