The Wayne State University men's tennis team is preparing to host the Second Annual Mike Kneale Memorial Tournament. The event will start at 9:00 AM on Saturday, November 2, at the WSU Tennis Courts in Detroit.
Joining Wayne State in this tournament are Lawrence Tech and Findlay, both of which participated in last year's inaugural competition. Notable players from the previous year include Cedric Drenth and Benjamin Hill from Germany, who contributed to the Warriors' impressive 12-2 team record.
Drenth and Daniel Grey, also from Germany, emerged victorious in last year's tournament by defeating Dom Spicer from London and Luke Laws from Sunderland. Grey now serves as a graduate assistant coach for Wayne State.
The tournament honors former Wayne State student-athlete Michael (Mike) Kneale, a Detroit native who played for the university's tennis squad between 1979 and 1982. Kneale was recognized as team MVP after both the 1979 and 1980 seasons.
During his time with Wayne State, Kneale excelled in singles and doubles competitions, helping secure GLIAC titles in 1980 and 1981 alongside partner Bob Jackson, who is a member of the WSU Hall of Fame.
