Wayne State fencing teams to compete in OSU Elite Invitational

The Wayne State University men's and women's fencing teams are set to participate in the Elite Invitational hosted by The Ohio State University. The competition will take place at the French Field House in Columbus, Ohio, beginning on Saturday, November 8, and concluding on Sunday, November 9.

In their most recent outing at Northwestern's Remenyik Open held October 19-20, Mitchell Gatrell from the men's team secured a runner-up finish in the Regional Open Circuit men's foil section with a record of 10-2. On the women's side, Ludovica Mancini was the only participant for Wayne State, finishing with a 5-2 record in foil.

The upcoming tournament will feature several top-ranked programs as determined by the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA). For the men’s competition, Wayne State will face teams ranked No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 3 Harvard, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 6 Penn, No. 7 Penn State, and No. 10 North Carolina. The women’s field includes No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 3 Harvard, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 6 Penn, No. 7 Penn State, and No. 10 North Carolina among its ranked competitors.

Other schools participating include Air Force, Northwestern, Denison, Cleveland State, Princeton, and Duke.

Saturday’s schedule consists of six rounds starting at 8:00 AM and ending with the final round at 4:30 PM. Sunday will have five rounds beginning at 8:00 AM and concluding with the last round scheduled for 3:00 PM.

Wayne State's matchups on Saturday begin against Ohio State at 8:00 AM followed by Air Force at 9:30 AM and North Carolina at 11:00 AM. After lunch at 12:30 PM, the women’s squad faces Denison while the men compete against Penn at 1:30 PM; later that day the men meet Cleveland State at 4:30 PM.

On Sunday morning at 8:00 AM the men’s team faces Princeton while the women go up against Harvard; this is followed by another men’s matchup versus Harvard at 11:00 AM. After lunch at noon thirty, Wayne State concludes with matches against Penn State (men) and Cleveland State (women) starting at 1:30 PM.
